Thank you for visiting us, and welcome to Plasbin
What is Plasbin?
The Plasbin, made of recycled plastic; set of five aims, to initiate and nurture waste segregation in the Sultanate of Oman (designed to segregate Plastic, Paper, Metal, Glass and 'Other' Waste)
Plasbin, as the name suggests, is a blend of the words ‘plastic’ and ‘bin,’ coined to clearly communicate its special environmental purpose and objectives for which it was designed.
Plasbin is a unit specially designed to facilitate for environmentally friendly collection and recycling of plastic waste in the Sultanate of Oman.
Plasbin is more that meets the eye
Plasbin, at large, is a unique recycling system in that, it is our day-to-day waste plastic creatively put together into a ‘recycled-plastic bin’ and many other forms of public artifacts.
In others words, we systematically collect waste plastic from the public and thereafter, creatively put it together into awesome indoor/outdoor artifacts for public admiration.
This way we hope - with everyone›s support - to keep waste plastic away from our precious environment and more so, from the toxic dumpsites that destroy the lives of our hapless wild animals, birds and marine life.
The big picture
Plasbin is more than a recycling unit, Plasbin at large, is an integrated environmental system incorporating two key components;
1: The Plasbin
To facilitate collection and recycling of plastic waste. However, by design for the purpose of public convenience and our broader waste segregation and recycling objectives, Plasbin incorporates 4 more replaceable segregation compartments for Paper, Metal, Glass and Trash (General Waste) It is the first of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman and aims to spearhead systematic segregation of waste materials across the country.
2: Plasbin Plastic Waste Awareness and Recycling Creativity Programme
Undertaken mainly through public workshops and plastic litter clean-up campaigns, these [Plasbin workshops] are mainly centered on two key audience groups
a) Academic institutions
To nurture young people across the nation into a recycling mindset through a combination of regular presentations, workshops, school’s waste creativity competitions, waste plastic litter clean-up programmes, among others.
b) Professional Art Community
To challenge them mainly through national or group competitions or special plastic waste art exhibitions to create and exhibit artworks from waste plastic. This aims to catalyze and sustain a national plastic waste creativity paradigm.
This is also to demonstrate to Oman's population the creative re-usability potential for waste plastic, ultimately we hope, will translate into sustainable recycling of plastic waste across the country.
If you wish to join us in any of these events, please find details of our events throughout the year at Plasbin Calendar page. Feel free to subscribe to our RSS feeds to stay atop.
Why only Plastic?
I'll be around for 1000 years!
Plastic, a material that may not biodegrade for up to one thousand years and yet one of the most widely used on consumer goods today, remains one of the most dreaded environmental nightmares of our times.
World's best brains tried and failed
Environmentalists and Industrial Engineers around the world continue to spend sleepless nights to find sustainable plastic waste management solutions, most of which include the widely unsuccessful ‘stop plastic litter’ campaigns, but failed miserably.
Plastic is lethal to hapless wildlife
It is notorious for killing birds, wildlife and marine life when they eat it confusing it for food. Most of these deaths are as a result of either suffocation, chocking or starvation owing to indigestion after swallowing where it remains in their stomach until they die. This cycle continues when other wildlife eat the dead ones.
'Stop using plastic' doesn't work!
In view of these environmental challenges faced with plastic waste, our solution provides a simple paradigm shift informed by the fact that plastic is so engrained in our daily lives that it is unlikely to go away anytime soon.
Plastic is not going away anytime soon
Plastic is versatile for creative recycling
Plasbin is simply our day-to-day waste plastic creatively put together into a ‘recycled-plastic bin’ and many other forms of public artifacts, thanks to it's (plastic) 'inborn' versatility
How does Plasbin benefit Society?
The benefits of the Plasbin initiative to our society and the environment at large cannot be overstated, and this is our rationale for requesting corporate organizations to partner with us in this effort.
The collective mission of the Plasbin public programmes is to catalyze the people of Oman for concerted efforts to clear plastic waste from Oman’s public environment towards our core objective; and that is, to stop plastic from ending up in our beautiful beaches, parks and landfills where wildlife, marine life and birds end up dying from its consumption confusing it for food.
Besides the obvious environmental benefits, Plasbin aims to spark public creativity and enthusiasm around plastic waste recycling; a factor that may potentially sprout a new generation of young people modeled on recycling paradigm. Let's leave that to the future generations to thank us.
